General Information:

St. Stephen's Day School is an outreach program of the church that was begun in 1985 as a non-profit service for toddlers through four years of age. The Day School is a state licensed child care center. The school has been awarded the Certificate of Distinction by the Office of School Readiness and also participates in the Georgia Pre-Kindergarten program for four year old children.

Administrative policies of the Day School are guided by the Vestry of St. Stephen's Church. The Day School is conducted by an experienced director and a highly qualified staff. Other than the state funding through the Georgia's Lottery for Pre-Kindergarten program, income is derived entirely from fees of children attending. The program is non-profit, self-supporting and operates on a budget separate from that of the church.

All children participate in appropriate activities throughout the day. The Day School's goal is to provide a safe, nurturing environment in which the child feels emotionally secure. This environment encourages physical, emotional and mental growth. Our belief is that children "learn through play", and we therefore provide a variety of experiences and exposures to create an atmosphere of learning. Our staff ratios are kept higher than required and the number of children in the program is kept low enough to ensure individual attention. We strive for the child to gain respect for self, others and property in a meaningful way in a warm, relaxed atmosphere, and to learn the limits of behavior reinforced by praise, as well as to gain skills to prepare for school. We also encourage the involvement of parents through volunteer time and teacher-parent conferences because we realize that they are the child's first teachers.

Programs for children age two through four are housed in the Parish Hall. The classrooms are furnished with appropriate child-sized furnishings conducive to free choice of activities that encourage exploration, dramatic play, and creative use of materials. Space is provided for group activity as well as individual work. The shaded playgrounds adjacent to the classrooms encourage large muscle development.
